8/10 Brian Staff review, 31 March 2011

What is this sublime post-rock jazz I got here in my shaking hairy mitts? I started thinking Tortoise meet Terry Riley from the off and I was half-correct geographically as Colorlist are from Chicago. And Jeff from the 'Toise guests on the track 'Nine Lives'. There's some utterly lovely stuff going on here. This EP is warm, deep, spiritual, playful, densely layered & complex, yet somehow largely accessible. This 10" captures a duo constructing a riot of interwoven rhythm & sound that utterly belies the fact that they're a two-piece. I cannot believe the amount of sheer joyous tumbling sound they conjure up between them. The flip opens with a more gentle, reflective piece with harmonium, woodwind & scuttling percussion being the prime movers. Closing with a gorgeous, perky slice of stumbling, playful eccentricity that features the delightful voice of Liz Payne - 'What We Have Left' really is a sublimely off-beat way to finish a record! - i'm left feeling very touched & calmed by what i've heard. Serein, a little Welsh label, need commending for unleashing this little treasure on the world!
