I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that Domino were releasing this exhaustive collection. There again I'd prefer them to do this than spunk the tax loss on another bunch of no-hopers like plenty of other labels I could mention. Lone Pigeon (aka Gordon Anderson) is a Scotland based artist who formed the (initially excellent) Beta Band then left them with immediate effect. He later formed The (very average) Aliens with two fellow ex-Betas and has reportedly suffered from years of mental illness, probably no suprise when you read that he once consumed 40 magic mushrooms every night for two months. Alas, Anderson is no Daniel Johnston-like tortured genius but a lo-fidelity singer-songwriter whose work has a pleasant warm melancholy to it which is most endearing but certainly not flecked with any greater genius that the lo-fi early Babybird vaults (which this colossal archive closely resembles). I have no time to go through each CD so instead I'm listening to the accompanying 'selection' compilation which reveals an artist basically doing what the hell he likes free of any restrictions or record label interference, some of which is great, some of which is isn't, but all of which is recorded and sung in an extremely affecting manner.
