Alice Gun sounds like a curious character. It mentions in the press release that she records as part of David Viner's band which has resulted in recordings with Ed Harcourt and a tour supporting the bloated and now dead White Stripes. She also records house music vocals 'for the money'. I like this lady's style already. 'Blood & Bone' is Gun's debut. Recorded in the cosy surroundings of her North London home as well as in an isolated farmhouse in the Lake District, 'Blood & Bone' sounds warm and intimate in production and tone. Gun's voice is strong and inventive and the list of instruments she dabbles with is equally impressive. Cello and piano dominate these recordings but it's also spattered with many interesting sounds which add colour and vibrancy to these somber compositions. This is very much in keeping with the work of PJ Harvey as well as the more recent Cat Power albums. Kinda striped back, ultra confident songwriting delivered with a sense of wizened maturity.
