- General Penitentiary by Nitty Gritty
A very close old friend first introduced me to Nitty Gritty some ten years or so ago and more recently I've been buzzing off the photographs of him in Beth Lesser's brilliant 'Dancehall' book that came out through Soul Jazz. This LP is new to my ears and totally is the perfect tonic to the grim reality of planet earth and its inhabitant's tragedies right now. Nothing soothes my soul like this stuff, just everything about it moves my limbs and tickles my brain. 'Penitentiary Dub' just hits so heavy, every sound with crystal clarity. Again as with the other Black Victory records of the era, this embraces digital drum rhythms along with live bass etc. Nitty even challenges Anthony "Red Rose" to the mic along with fellow cohort "King Kong". A brave challenge... Wonder if they ever did have that soundclash? Recommended times.....zillions!
