- Mean Streets Pt.1 by FaltyDL
9/10 Ant Staff review, 25 March 2011
Another classy slab o' wax from Loefah's always-on-the-money Swamp 81 imprint. You just cannot pin this label down! One minute it's footworking bass music from Addission G / Ramadanman and then ultra-slow heavy, proper dubstep from Pinch, deep dark shit from Kriminal Minds and now this super-funky belter from the NYC man who also drops an album for Planet Mu right about now. 'Mean Streets Part One' has a mega funked out bassline with Latin American percussion. It actually gives off a strong vibe of pimps and hustlers on the streets of New York circa the 1970's. This really is a tune with wide appeal and compatible in DJ sets playing everything from straight funk & house to new bass tracks. It slows during the breakdown, gets filtered and glitched briefly before swooping back in with whipping hi-hats then he strips it all back down to cool congas etc. 'Moonshine' is a stuttering warped soul track with wicked vocal samples, a wobbly/squelching bassline, and a great string sample. 'Hard' is a no messin' heavy dark and twisted technoid rhythm with awesome hardcore breaks and heavily dubbed out vocal samples. This one's an absolute monster, perhaps for fans of Darqwan. Numbered edition of 500 copies on 180g wax.
