8/10 Dave Staff review, 08 April 2011
Start spreading the news - I'm leaving today! I'm gonna be a part of the black metal scene in, wait for it, New York, New York! This band of hard rocking metallers know how to shred. Not shred in the Malmsteen sense, more like, the world might be rocked completely off its little axis by the ferocity of the band's playing! These guys are taking it to the next level. The drums thunder like a double-kick stampede of mammoths. The frenetic guitar squawks and chugs like a prehistoric terror bird and the bass causes chasms to appear in your face. It's a relentless assault on the senses! Its like Bad Boys II with less swearing and more ACTION! A full on black metal experience that WILL NOT BE DENIED!!! I actually liked listening to it! When I say liked listening to it I mean I coped with it by gripping the arms of my chair and bunging loads of TP up my nostrils to try and quell the nosebleeds that were caused by the monumental riffage. They have a sort of transcendental thing going on, these guys do, which is most excellent. Despite the religious subtext this is as pure metal as you would like it to be. It's a bone-crunching affair that does not compromise, not once, over its quite lengthy running time. Liturgy are into film scores, and you could say that certain parts of songs have a cinematic feel to them , which is a nice angle to have in your arsenal. This album might be one of the most extreme things ever released on Thrill Jockey? If you like extreme metal and fancy burning churches or stabbing another black metal band's lead singer for not being metal enough this pup is for you.....
