I was always quite moved when listening to Nirvana's legendary Unplugged MTV session by how Cobain took his favorite songs by what were relatively obscure bands beloved to him and relatively few others & overnight exposed these acts to millions of potential new ears. I've only got one Meat Puppets album, II, and when I pull it off the shelf I find myself smiling happily, knowing my ears are about to be totally pampered. I really like the sound of the new album. They're still doing that skewed psychedelic/country/college rock thing that has echoes of REM & Soul Coughing on 'Orange' with some ace wired guitar & thunderous drums. 'Shave It' has an irresistible Jamaican style skank. Never has white reggae sounded so bearable. 'Baby Don't' is husky C&W with heart and 'Hour of the Idiot' is certainly more spirited than anything Stipe & Co. could produce today. It definitely has a strong Wall of Voodoo influence to these ears? In amongst this very vivid collection of Americana is some real unhinged oddness. You never quite get a straight shot with the Meat Puppets. there's often something a bit fucked-up (see acid-fried) lurking about, bubbling beneath the respectable, mature facade. This is a diverse, strong & satisfying listen which I can imagine making their small yet devoted fanbase very happy indeed.
