The Nonplus label is increasingly impressive. Sadly our copies of last weeks offering from Actress arrived too late to review so I thought we'd compensate a little by picking up on this 12" from the man behind the Workshop label. 'Wonderkidd' is a fine example of modern skewed house with melodic string refrain and sparse plinky-plonky percussion. It gets going mid-way with hypnotic reverberating piano stabs and a real heady kinda downer-ish mood, like Rob hood in a K-hole. 'Looser' is similarly subdued with a vocal sample stating "Everything's blue in this room" repeating over lo-fi hi-hat's, slightly unnerving string and lots of warped futuristic robotic bleeps. The string gets slowed down and toyed with creating a wonky sea-sick effect. Another string appears as an edited sample and adds to the weirdness, hinting at the possibility of euphoria but things remain reasonably bleak. Seriously deep, forward thinking and slightly discordant cerebral house music which has a most unique quality.
