Oh man, I've not heard Naked Raygun in aaaaages. I remember reading once that they were the band which prompted Steve Albini to form Big Black (he even nabbed Santiago Durango and Jeff Pezzati from them) so we all owe them everything, basically. Personally I find that it's quite hard to see the influence on some of their later records (as good as they are in their own right) but it's crystal clear on this super early stuff.. It's pure proto-Big Black. This tastefully reissued compilation of Chicago punk and hardcore also showcases the likes of Strike Under, Subverts, Effigies, Da, Silver Abuse and Subverts, all recorded live at the Oz venue (pictured on the back daubed with with the amazing grafitti legend 'CLOSED BY MAYOR + COPS FOR BEING PUNK') over three days in '81. It's all heartwarmingly ace stuff but Silver Abuse are definitely the surprise trump card for me with their spaciously No Wavey style standing out a mile in amongst the more straightforwardly hardcore leanings of the others. An excellent document (it's worth investigating just for the photos alone) and one I'm really grateful to have encountered.
