- Washed & Dried by Melted Toys
Melted Toys get reviewed because we played the Jim Jones Revue single and it was so bad Dave had to go home to cry in despair for a bit, Business Lady ran round screaming with a postal sack on her head & Phil stood outside smoking a whole fistful of tabs, grimacing. Only our Ant was spared, due to his zen-like meditation techniques which allow him to shut his hearing down at will. So we plucked this band out (thank God) and they slot easily in with that whole spooked cannon of strange 80's inspired pop. But these fellers sound more synth-orientated although they don't particularly produce 'synth' pop per se? I'm most intrigued at their sleepy, woozy melodies and retro-electro pulses. I love the minimal old style drum machines and the aquatic, cheeky bass playing on some of the songs. I dig the slightly listless vocals, I respect their penchant for stripped back, ghostly guitar motifs. I cannot think of any particular band they take their inspiration from, it's a real melting pot! (although Wild Nothing & Beach Fossils could be considered fellow travellers in some ways?) Basically, this is great, original understated New Wave pop music played with authenticity & conviction and sounds blissfully lost in time, like a forgotten treasure from 30 years back. On marbled grey wax too!
