Columbia: the new Africa. At least in 'Archival Global Music Compilation World' anyway. Fresh off that amazing Palenque Palenque triple LP comes Soundway's next foray into the land of Carlos Valderrama, Cartagena!, which focuses (unsurprisingly) on the sounds of the coastal town of Cartagena. And in particular on the big bands of Curro Fuentes, whose family founded the Discos Fuentes label. Now I know only little bits and bobs about the styles native to South America and as a result I wouldn't feel confident in trying to place this in any sort of accurate context for you so I'll defer to the blurb on the back of the disc which mentions cumbias, porros, mapales, salsa and descargas. To my untrained ears it sounds like a fantastic combination of Latin and Caribbean styles which'd make perfect sense given the location of the city involved.. It's like some 'Duke Ellington on holiday' type shit or something. And that's got to be amazing, right?
