7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 22nd June 2015

Prior to buying “No Witch” by The Cave Singers the only thing I’d heard by them was the opening track, “Gifts and the Raft” which I thought was brilliant. I love the alt. folk feel, the melody and the harmonies. When I subsequently heard the rest of the album I was quite disappointed as, to my ears at the time, it was completely different. The rest seemed to be less considered and it just didn’t fit with my expectations. Since my initial disappointment however, this has proved to be a grower. “Swim Club” has a similar feel to the opening track, albeit without the harmonies that hooked me. “Black Leaf” ups the tempo and is a gravel voiced, stomping, rootsy blues rock number, which is more in-keeping with the rest of the album.

“Falls” and “Outer Realms” see the band doing something that falls somewhere between the more folky side of Led Zeppelin and Califone. “Haystacks” has a Stonesy, gospel feel to it and is definitely a stand out. "Distant Sures" is nice, too. Overall, this is decent, if you allow it time to grow.
