- Ni maitre, Ni marteau by Thymolphthalein
Now, to finish off the day (almost) is this strange beauty. Taking the core elements of abstract free jazz & outsider electronics, this five piece ensemble defy categorisation with not only their unpronounceable name but their irregular take on music. After a few minutes of this late 2009 live recording from Basel, you start to realise just how much thought & effort goes into creating such improvised & experimental work. Creating an acoustically charged atmosphere into which numerous instruments both electronic & traditional are tweaked, tapped, hit, squeezed, caressed & occasionally thrashed in a flurry of mania, i'm totally taken by the intriguing & otherworldly sounds coaxed from Piano, synth, double bass, & percussion. This is truly free music with a stunning sonic language all of its own. To say this record is "difficult" is an understatement but compared to last weeks underwhelming Coh affort, this has all the exciting outside-the-box hallmarks that make Peter Rehberg's Editions Mego the most on-the-money imprint in the Western hemisphere. **Please note, this states 45 RPM on the label. I suspect it should be 33. But it probably sounds best somewhere in between, like most experimental music, it encourages some playing about with!**
