It's a collaborative project by Fred Deakin (of Lemon Jelly and Airside) and Robin Jones (of The Beta Band and The Aliens) that's dead set on mashing dance tempos with elements of folk and jazz. The Flashman project is a bit of an oddity in my opinion. It's a collaborative project by Fred Deakin (of Lemon Jelly and Airside) and Robin Jones (of The Beta Band and The Aliens) that's dead set on mashing dance tempos with elements of folk and jazz. The result is a bizarre multi-cultural mish mash of styles that doesn't sit particularly well together yet still makes for an intriguing listen. There are various pro-players in the mix here (to quote the press release; "jazz piano legend Brian Kellock, 86 year old clarinetist Wally Fawkes (who was a regular player in Humphey Lyttleton's original band,) trumpet extremist and James / Pale Fountains / Shack / Spaceheads member Andy Diagram, and several other highly trained professionals.) that assist this odd blend of ideas, giving it a coherency it may have lacked otherwise. Still, I can't help but think of this as a weird muzak you'll most likely to hear blasting out of some dodgy jazz cafe in the near future. It's good, I just can't relate. Sorry lads.
