7/10 Penrith Steve Customer review, 20th May 2016

“Smart Flesh” is the fourth album by The Low Anthem and was famously recorded in an abandoned pasta sauce factory. I say famously, I remember a big deal being made of that fact when it came out.

Whilst its predecessor had a good number of gorgeous moments such as “To Ohio” it was let down an equal number of tracks that didn’t quite do it form me. Here, they seem to do a better job. Although, it has to be said that they’ve desperately tried to recreate Dylan and The Band’s “Basement Tapes” – this will hit home hardest when you hear “Hey! All You Hippies”. There are gorgeous songs such as “Apothecary Love”, but this time, when they do rock it up a bit, on songs such as “Boeing 737” for example, they do it well.

Anyway, as an album it’s better than its predecessor but still a little frustrating as pastiche rather than originality is a trap they keep falling in to.
