Nice Ass by Free Kitten

7/10 Penrith Steve 5th November 2014

In 1994, A group made up of Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Pussy Galore’s Julie Cafritz, Pavement’s Mark Ibold and The Boredoms’ Yoshimi P-We. They called themselves Free Kitten and recorded and album called “Nice Ass”. What’s not to like?

It’s pretty good. It’s messy, shouty, noisy and these are all good things. Opener “Harvest Spoon” is a good alt. rock stomp and delivers what the exciting line-up promises. “Proper Band” is good ol’ riot grrrl fare. “Kissing Well” recalls Gordon’s “Crème Brulee” that rounded-off Sonic Youth’s “Dirty” album so nicely. Indeed, most of Kim Gordon’s songs on here are similar to what she was doing with Sonic Youth in the early 90s. They are dirtier, a little more falling apart-at-the-seams, but that is a musical aesthetic that I enjoy. Ibold’s influence is evident on “Blindfold Test”. It has an element of “Two States” about it.

The fact is, I was never not going to like this. If you like riot grrrl, but a little more lopsided, then this maybe an album for you.
