Jazzman continue the eternal quest for the ultimate rarities with their 'Holy Grail' series. This time around they've uncovered a rarely heard gem of an LP from Canadian (?) Funk & Soul outfit The Sidewinders. Nova Scotia seems like an unlikely place to discover a full on Funk band of any discernible quality but I guess if you're looking hard enough you'll find goodness all over the lands. 'Flatfoot Husslin' comes with it's own set of tragic tales and mysteries that are evaluated at length in the liner notes but for now all you need to know is that this is an album that never really found it's feet mainly due to the length of time it took to become a reality. Though the recording I'm listening to was completed in a couple of days it took three years for the album to come to fruition and by that point the momentum was lost and the band was no more. Shame really as this is a fantastic album worthy of many a fan, not just collector nerds who are willing to part with $2000 dollars for an original pressing. These tracks are for dancing and party fun, not nerdy chin stroking re-appraisal. Jam packed with infectious Funk & Soul grooves played with outrageous enthusiasm and flare it's obvious these lads can really kick it. Big fan of the light and fluid guitar work here and the vocals have that dreamy soul quality all sewn up. You can tell they are informed by all the good stuff too...Great players. Good hunting Jazzlad.
