- Kammerspiel by Conquering Animal Sound

Coming seemingly out of nowhere (actually Glasgow, Scotland) Conquering Animal Sound are one of those bands who if you see live you'll fall in love with immediately. The man spends his time looping up a multitude of instruments, fingerclicks into mikes, technofied beats, dreamy synths and simple guitar chords while the lady sings intriguing lyrics into a variety of microphones, looping them up, harmonising, twisting, distorting. That's all very well but how are they on record? Well brilliant actually, this is a supremely assured debut of expertly produced lovelorn glacial electronica. Singer Anneke Kampman is the secret weapon, possessing not only a great voice (most reminiscent of Bjork) but a never ending supply of ideas of how to use it in new interesting ways. Their songs usually start with naked beats, simple melodies, gradually adding layers of instrumentation, ephemera and vocal. The most obvious comparison is as I say to Bjork and the minimalistic beats and whimsy of Mum but the most striking is to lost 90's dreamers Insides who you may not have heard of but please do check out their stunning debut 'Euphoria'. This is experimentalism with musicality, they are restlessly creative yet always song based, winsome at times yet never twee. Go seek.
