Another compilation from The Mississippi Recording Inc., this time it's a collection of country blues cuts dating from 1927 to 1952 and featuring the likes of Sam Davies, Willie Johnson, Lulu Jackson, Gary Davis, Bukka White and Memphis Minnie among many others. As is to be expected of recordings of this genre and time period time, these tracks are warm, intimate affairs that can't help but satisfy the ear. Again, these recordings rely very much on the quality of the artists and the one-take performances they were more than capable of producing. This one's full of joyous surprises including Henry Thomas's excellent guitar and flute masterpiece 'Bulldoze Blues'. Later recorded (and re-titled 'Goin' Up The Country') by Canned Heat, their version was good but it pales in comparison to the delivery of the original. Other highlights include Willie Mae Williams 'Don't Want To Go There' which bursts with manic energy and Bayless Rose's 'Black Dog Blues'; that dudes voice is amazing! Sounds unbelievably good to me this morning. Must have a case of the blues I guess.
