A friend once lumped together all the late 80's indie pop bands with two word 'The' names as The Can'tthinkofanames. Here's a good one to add to the list The James's. Funnily enough his name was James - funny how things work out. Anyway this is the kind of dark slightly gothy indie as peddled these days by the likes of the hilarious O Children. Not as preposterous of course but what could be? This is the sort of stuff that was around in '81, on the fringes of the top 75, post punk with a dark edge, synths whistling away amongst jagged guitars. Plus point for the lyric 'my boss is a major goofball'. The B side though hurtles the record up a notch into the 'very interesting' category. Its madcap:- a crazy broken shards of glass sample churns away while vocals go hurtling skyward into the ether, there's lots of weird unexpected tempo changes a la Fiery Furnaces. Its on the edge of lunacy and all the better for it - crazy rhythms indeed.
