No Age's PPM label fires out another cracker from its noisy arsehole thing week with a new EP by LA's The Tearist. This boy and girl duo fire off 6 tracks of electro, gothic, noise, indie and disco right into your face. The opener has a wee whiff of Animal Collective about it and I thought oh hear we go again. But after further listening they've got their own thing going on and it sounds nothing at all like the Animal Collective. I could well have been on drugs when I heard that... I don't know. The vocals are pretty gothy with a Siouxsie Sioux thing going on and these are woven into some pretty decent pop tunes. The songs are sparsely constructed and often there will be a beat and some vocals before some strange keyboard noise appears from nowhere. Works very well actually and I think fans of Danielle Dax, (early) Zola Jesus and Weird Records will dig this peculiar 6 track debut. Nice!
