- Palace Of Marvels (queered Pitch) by Marcus Schmickler

So the deal here is that Marcus "utilizes a new interpretation of 1960's discovery, the Shepard-tone, discovered by a fellow called Roger Shepard. This creates the auditory illusion of a tone that continually rises or descends in pitch, yet ultimately seems to get no higher or lower. The result: utterly compelling, total headfuck computer music of the highest order. This is one of those listens where you're never entirely sure what is actually happening or what is going to happen with results that are confusing but induce ecstatic sensations as can be heard in 'Rissit Brain Hammer' which by the end had me feeling like I needed to check in at a mental asylum. Likewise with 'Hypercubist Pareto Dist'. The sounds on here shift around so much and are so wonky I'm left feeling totally deranged. At moments I feel like I'm stuck on a fairground ride I can't get off, all disorientated but enjoying the strange feeling. 'Quasi Segregative' is totally bonkers and how I imagine the sounds in Albert Hoffman's head while he was taking that infamous bicycle ride home from his lab. So great to get supplied with two great computer music albums this week, what with that other ace disc from Mark Fell. I shall sleep a happy man... Oh and what a year for editions Mego too, my favourite label of 2010 hands down.
