8/10 Brian Staff review, 26 November 2010
This is a really cool record from a band with a rather shit name. Movie Star Junkies manage to stir into their pot a vibrant mixture of Surf Rock, Rockabilly Tindersticks-y balladeering & flecks of industrial power into this delightful brooding voodoo concoction. They sound weirdly topical & exciting despite a confusing array of influences. They could be the American Gallon Drunk really. Comparisons have even been made to Dog Faced Hermans but I think there's more of a mid period Ex vibe to them. The way they combine thunderous low-down piano & spooky guitar lines with disembodied vocals and a sinister essence is quite spellbinding. They sound like they should have formed in Soho in 1993 but they got someone really good to produce their record instead of some drunken Camden Scrote. To be truthful, even though the new single is great, i'd have this over the Grinderman album anyday. It sounds totally natural & bloody groovy too. For Birthday Party, early Tindersticks, Cramps & RFTC fans for defs......
