9/10 Brian Staff review, 19 November 2010
It's really hotting up is interest in the Congotronics stuff. I wasn't quite prepared for a wild & lush double set containing a madly eclectic carnival of remixers combining their talents to rework this rich seam of deeply rhythmical & often euphoric Congolese music. Mainly reworkings of Konono No. 1 & Kasai Allstars material, you get Andrew Bird re-arranging Konono & Sobanza Mimanisa into a lilting traditional african folk beauty, coming in after the startlingly original Kasai re-jigs by Deehoof & Animal Collective - you know you're in for a scintillating stew, a true aural travelogue. Tussle take Konono No. 1 into a highly danceable ACR/Liquid Liquid style direction, then onto Glenn Kotche's twinkly, chiming disorientating percussive onslaught, Jherek Biscoff's perky traditional march, Juana Molina's woozy, brittle minimalist edits, Mark Ernestus' fabulous earthy tribal techno dub...the list goes on, there is so many great ideas on here and it is largely infectious to the max. I've no time to check the second disc out but I will be indulging this weekend for sure. This is a truly spellbinding head-trip from producers around the globe, obviously enamoured with this highly cherishable strain of contemporary African music, which marries timeless traditional elements with modern soundsystem nous. I just want to close my eyes & trip off into the stars but unfortunately i'm stuck in THIS hole for another 5 hours. Bah!
