It may have escaped your notice but it's Christmas soon and the rush for underground types to release their Christmas songs has started in earnest. Here are retro folky clan Trembling Bells accompanied by Bonnie Prince Billy and Mike Heron (Incredible String Band) with a strong contender for the most 'Fairytale of New York' a-like ballad yet. A tragi-comic tale of drinking yourself to death complete with heartfelt strings, tender oboes and a drunken piano which erupts halfway through, charging into a singalong chorus with crashing drums. A hit maybe? The B side 'Feast of Stephen' rolls out all the lyrical cliches you may expect, adding some Salvation Army trumpets along the way and finishing with a wonderful flourish which makes me want to wander up to a remote pub in bonny Scotland and slosh some beer around.
