8/10 Brian Staff review, 04 November 2010
This 6 tracker is my first thing today and is quite welcome to my ears. A dusty low-down cello leads a melancholy waltzer of an opener with its slow thumping/chinking percussion bringing to mind a doomed jailbird having a final dance with a prison officer before the gallows have his damaged soul. A wistful chamber piece follows, strings & piano tentatively circling one another whilst I think I can hear an acoustic guitar being gently strummed. I don't know whether the guitar here is intended as a chaperone or a referee but it is employed in a wonderfully discreet manner! This is esentially another chamber classical release with all the sensitivity & grace you'd expect from the genre. Ambient electronics are applied in a subtle way, fleshing out the backdrop on the penultimate track to reduce the sparseness of the instruments, the resulting drone adds a warm glow to proceedings. Very pretty!
