8/10 Brian Staff review, 01 December 2010
Oh no. A Witch House compilation. I merely thought this stupidly named genre was the responsibility of some idiot fashionista type working at a Nathan Barley style rag! Yet it seems to have infiltrated the minds of the people who work at Robot Elephant too as they've sent us a nine track compilation of the stuff. I cannae hear much house, see. That's my problemo. I can otherwise sense strong pulses of classic EBM & New Beat. Plus mogadon techno with blackly kaleidoscopic trance elements maybe. There's strong suggestions of dark-wave electro too, often prevalent underneath all the scary synths & druid-like vocals & trancendental om-like tones. I love the sound of some of this. It's definately deserving of a sub-genre tag but I can't help thinking this is the dirty tribal Hell to Chillwave's blissed-out Heaven and this constant meshing of established styles doesn't necessarily mean we've always got something wickedly original on our hands. Some strong tunes here mind, I'd happily recommend a punt.
