OK, this is the second Congotronics remix 12" following on from the Shackleton/Burnt Friedman effort I reviewed last week. This ones on Honest Jon's but it looks the same as the last, packaged in a black disco bag with a basic label. Both sides are mixes by Mark Ernestus of Basic Channel/Maurizio who, to be honest, I'm not at all familiar with i'm afraid. Still, I love Konono No.1 and I'm excited by the prospect of them being remixed to within an each of their lives by a minimalist techno DJ. Side A is the dub mix which isn't difficult to imagine - take the root rhythms contained within a Konono tune and let the different elements drift in and out as the Ernestus man sees fit. Technically it's a dub in the way it's produced but it sounds more like a tribal take on a that dodgy Leftfield track they used on that Guinness ad years back. It's totally hypnotic stuff that would no doubt suit a tribal gathering of some kind. 'Masikulu Rhythm' is pretty much the same but stripped of its dub aspects leaving only the riddim. It's a pulsating beast that places the emphasis on the cheeky rhythms those Konono boys & girls can muster from their archaic instruments. Excellent stuff.
