8/10 Phil Staff review, 20 January 2011
Party time!! Soul Jazz have very nicely put together a comp of Brazilian ass shaking Bossa Nova especially for you. God bless 'em. The extensive 2 disc set and book (or 2 x 2LP) will pretty much make you a knowledgeable person on the subject in no time. Though will have to listen to it and read the booklet (which I've just thumbed through and it looks fascinating). There's some big hitters on this comp like Elis Regina, Joao Gilberto, Sergio Mendes, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento and lots more. I don't really know too much about Bossa Nova (I am more familiar with the Tropicalia scene) but after a quick flick through it I reckon I might want to get to grips with it cos it's a whole lotta fun. It's a lot jazzier than I expected it to be and I can guarantee you'll never hear as much jazz flute in your life! Stereolab were influenced by a lot of these guys so if you're into latter period 'Lab then you should be interested in this!
