Is it just me or is every band "on the up" in the current pool of U.S. Underground acts obsessed with sounding lo-fi, 80s or just really fucking druggy? These guys don't sound 80's though. They do sometimes fall into the 90's post-Slanted & Enchanted category. Those wonderful bands that buried their rambling, shambling tunes under swathes of crackly distortion and static-like fuzz, but only so much to ensure all the spellbinding aspects of the song were still audible to the naked ear (if with a little concerted effort) These Seattle-based guys veer between trashed indie-rock nuggets, psychedelic garage stomps ala Thee Oh Sees and wild, lysergic Sonic-Youth-in-a musty-drawer-on-drugs jams such as the fabulous centrepiece 'Hey Little Girl'. Amped-up properly I can sense something greatly thrilling about many of these tunes. They're loose & lairy enough to get down & dirty to, but at the drop of a hat will slam into a tripped out, squalling head-rush that can last anywhere between 10 seconds & a minute! You know, this band somehow recall a more 60's inspired Dinosaur Jr with a bit of a dinky Shimmy Disc gleam to them. And Guided by Voices production values! They've also got a distinctly feral vibe that makes me want to feed them crushed biscuits in the hope they might gently nip my hand! To be frank, I was expecting something a little overplayed & potentially tiresome when this self-titled effort started out, but by the end I'm utterly hooked and wanna start it all rolling again. Go grab them hooks, they is plenty, they is tasty!
