First up whats going on with the hair?  Paul Smith has been be-hatted for the last few years so its obviously on its way out. Also anyone care to speculate on what goes on under Badly Drawn Boy's hat? I shudder to think. Anyway this is the new single from the Maximo Park frontman. The A side is a ploddier version of Maximo Park. High on U2 style reverbed 80's guitars but a bit low on me ...

High on U2 style reverbed 80's guitars but a bit low on melody and inspiration. Still way, way better than anything on the last Maximo Park record and most recalling tragic forgotten 80's band The Sound. The B side though is brilliant. A home recording of looped guitar and scattershot rhythmic drums with Smith's distinctive vocal on top recalling Xiu Xiu, 'Kid A' Radiohead or various mid 90's post rock dreamers. A rather pleasant suprise.

Paul Smith's hair? maybe he'll have a transplant eventually....then he could stop wearing those hats. But does it matter?Paul has been quoted as saying that his hats are "a visual motif" onstage. And very smart they are too, apart from the bowler, which made me think of Freddie Davies. Liked Our Lady Of Lourdes, but have yet to hear the B side.
