OK, this one's gonna take some explaining. 'Muzikal Yooth' is a collection of covers recorded as part of Youth Music Summer school set up by a bunch of ace musicians from Glasgow (Emily MacLaren of Michael Dracula/The Lady Vanishes, Sam Smith of Mother & The Addicts and Jamie Greer of Park Attack) who let the kids make use of their sweet analogue studio facilities. The result is a mish-mash of songs by the likes of Iggy Pop, ESG, The Monks, The Cramps, Elvis Presley and, of course, The Kingsmen (you gotta have 'Louie Louie' in there after all) covered by kids of various ages with varying degrees of skill. As a concept this is totally solid and I can think of nothing better than hearing, say, two 10 year old twins from Ghana (known as the J-Jems) taking on 'Moody' (ESG) or a bunch of wild Glaswegian tearaways having a crack at 'I Wanna Be Your Dog'. These kids are good too! Each track is covered with a unique enthusiasm that would be impossibly hard to replicate in any other environment and the fact that kids have a hand in recording and mixing the tracks means that they are gaining invaluable skills and experience along the way. Gotta applaud Optimo for getting behind this release if only for the J-Jems... Those kids kick ass.
