I'm 38. My mum and dad are extremely proud I've lasted this long. I'm still bang up to date though - have just checked my Twitters and am listening to 'chillwave'. This is a movement of groups who sound like the best of the 1980's tail end of Yacht Rock put through some kind of digitized blender. I had a stand up row with a friend (aged 43) about who was the best, Washed Out or Toro Y Moi. We are truly the generation who never grew up. To me, of this music Washed Out do it best, their sound is widescreen rather than bedroom, somehow more organic. Small Black apparently double as Washed Out's live band but that doesn't stop them from sounding more like Toro Y Moi on this, their debut album. The first song here is a killer, its like Prefuse 73 and My Bloody Valentine remixing China Crisis. The album has lots of production touches reminiscent of early Whitney or Madonna but the prevailing vibe is the summer of 82, 'Club Tropicana' riding high in the hit parade, China Crisis 'Wishful Thinking' the soundtrack to late nights in the sunlounge (8pm - I was 10). All this is mangled up into some kind of synth pop dreamland - twisted this way and that, but its not all '80's nostalgia - there's the audible presence of Animal Collective and Deerhunter throughout. Overall a fine album and seems to be revealing itself more on each listen. Recommended.
