8/10 Brian Staff review, 07 October 2010

I want some more Jazz. I've just had to wrestle Brett up & down the stairs to get this record out of his mitts, he was halfway out the door with it! You see, if you sliced Brett up, horizontally speaking, he'd have "CONNOISSEUR OF JAZZ" running all the way through him like a stick of rock. Me, i'm no connoisseur but I love the breathless spirit & wild abandon of some of these quality free jazz releases. I used to merely respect it because it tortured Phil to his very core, but he's grown accustomed to its whims & wantonness. Damn. So, i'm stuck with this mad clattering, parping, grumbling, rattling, meandering & demented mess of a record and have to admit it's an untamed, unkempt & fascinating ride through some seriously frantic & stormy jazz waters. The playing is properly manic but this isn't just a barking sax-heavy blast of audio nihilism. It's an underground treasure from 2005 from Finland, a country with a very respectable pedigree as far as this particular unhinged genre goes. Check the mad hippy on the front. He looks like he should be at a Psy-Trance night, the goon. If he's truly "letting go" to the sounds emitting from this LP, then those awful trousers & the questionable headgear are well & truly forgiven. The other guy looks like the singer from the old SF band Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, does anyone agree?
