- Ten Short Songs For Modern Lovers by Aidan Moffat

How can I review this? By the time I've thought of a bastard word to say, the song's over! This 7" is a genuine mini album. 10 eclectic vignettes clocking in at around the 1 minute mark, 5-a-side! The songs on side un veer between an acoustic lament, a warm organ-led lullaby, some mad distorted electro-thrash & a scratchy lo-fi folk number with some tasty backdrop of a brooding oncoming storm. Side deux brings us more folky foot-tappery, a scratchy top-ended feedbacker of a thing & a muffled, embittered piece containing nothing more than the sound of Mr. Moffat cynically venting his spleen whilst (possibly) kicking a bucket. It all ends with another organ-led piece, this time a miserabalist ballad. Totally, mesmeric & wretched throughout! How he squeezes so much out of such simple ingredients I'll never know. I don't even like the grumpy Scottish fucker that much (musically that is, I'm sure he's a treasure to know personally...) but this is a really great little record with its heart on its sleeve, presented in a heartwarming old-skool fashion. Ace sleeve too!
