- The Lives Of Charles Douglas by Charles Douglas
What a back story. Nervy, drug addled 22 year old Charles Douglas meets Moe Tucker in the 1990's and somehow persuades her to record an album, hires Ultra Vivid Scene's Kurt Ralske to produce. All decamp to a terrifying rat infested studio with a band featuring the grandson of the Indian Prime Minister but the thing never gets released.....until now. Its quite amazing that so many 'name' people were involved in this - there must have been a hell of a lot of drugs about at the time. The sound, as you may imagine, is very, very Velvet Underground, the drums are of course spot on for this type of music, Douglas drawl is a near perfect Lou Reed pastiche the songs are varying in quality, there's the odd duffer but when they hit they hit hard. Almost every post Velvets New York band to spring out of New York come to mind:- The Feelies, Talking Heads, Ramones, Galaxie 500 and even The Strokes. Whilst listening you can read the brilliant sleeve notes which feature some brilliant anecdotes about the characters involved.

I wasn't aware of the sordid story behind it all. I'm one of those few weirdos who owned (and owns) the CD from the original No. 6 release. :)
