Though Sun Ra's third album 'Jazz In Silhouette' is his last "conventional" record before side-stepping into the stratospheres of cosmic avant-garde jazz, it's still one of his greatest works which is deserving of a whole lot more attention. Marrying post-bop styles with elements of big band, 'Jazz In Silhouette' is a complete joy to listen to and can stand alongside many of the hugely important jazz records from 1959. A crucial record in understanding Sun Ra's early beginnings, or just a really good listen.

- Jazz In Silhouette by Sun Ra
8/10 Jack 11th December 2016Eight strong tracks from the late 50s and early 60s. Jazz In Silhouette, one of many long forgotten Sun Ra albums, highlights the be-bop he cherished before stepping into the fold of the avant-garde. This album is rich in composition, with extended solos throughout courtesy of Sun Ra's Arkestra. To describe the music contained within this album as majestic would be an understatement. The sheer joy of the recording is finely captured here, every note and solo encompassing Sun Ra's larger themes of space, peace, and love.
