The compilations in Analog Africa’s Afro-Beat Airways series are some of the best LPs to emerge from the glut of recent West African rock/funk reissues. West African Shock-Waves - Ghana & Togo 1972-1979 might just be the pick of AA's bunch. The fourteen tunes here are superb demonstrations of the way American funk, soul and Motown fused with local sounds like High-Life in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Some of the tracks featured on West African Shock-Waves are Ebo Taylor & The Pelicans’ ‘Come Along’ and Cos-Ber-Zam’s ‘Ne Noya’ - you may recognise the latter due to it having been sampled by Daphni.
