According to the label Martin Arnold is 'one of the most underrated composers of our time'. I've got to admit he's a totally new name to me and, as my first impressions of this debut release proper (not including private press type CDrs) are very positive I'd have to concur with their assessment! These three long-form tracks (of 38, 17 and 20 minutes in length) combine ambience, field recordings, neo-classical touches, folkiness, live instrumentation (including bagpipes and brass), subtle electronic splashes and improvisation all in together (at least I think it does, but it's possible some of those are infiltrating my headphones through the simultaneously blasting office speakers) without ever coming close to falling into the 'jack of all trades, master of none' trap. I guess there's a fair bit of stuff around that goes for this sort of multi-faceted approach but the result here sounds pretty unique to my ears and probably not quite what you'd expect from reading those elements.. I don't quite know what it is but something about it's reminding me of some of Richard Youngs' earlier stuff, albeit less rough around the edges. It all makes for a tricky describe but a beguiling listen!
