Sagitarius A-Star is the new label from the people who brought you Qbico. So now you know. The Phill Musra Group is led (surprisingly) by Phill Musra (hey, you never know - just look at the Joseph Holbrooke Trio) who sports a totally Albert Ayler-ish sound, with strong, assertive bursts of phrasing occasionally giving way to unfettered, passionate squawking. The first side plays out almost like a duo outing for the most part with his sax forming a fine partnership with the drums of Don Hooker, who favours a pleasantly rocky sort of a style but hints at some nice swing on occasion. The bongos do augment the rhythm from time to time, and do a good job when they do, but it seems so infrequent that it's almost comical in a way. The pianist only seems to turn up on the other side, instantly bringing a little more of a loungey feel to things, but the super dry recording of the set stops it from getting uncomfortably smooth. I seem to be giving everything four stars this week so why buck the trend?
