- Way Down South by Bill Orcutt
9/10 Brett Staff review, 23 September 2010
Ex-Harry Pussy man Bill Orcutt's A New Way to Pay Old Debts was one of my highlights of last year with its unique style of guitar improvisation, powered by an old acoustic with two of the strings removed, which expertly straddled the line between American primitivist blues and Derek Bailey-style avant-garde solo maneuvers while retaining the punk energy you'd expect from a guy who's spent most of his musical career rubbing audiences up the wrong way. This tour release differs from the LP in that there's less of a reliance on constantly returning to the violently hammered low E string, more space in the performance and, often, more frenzied occurences of the wild vocal moans and interjections which tend to pepper his playing but it's no less of a satisfying beast for the changes.. If anything, I'm getting even more of a feeling of raw physicality from this one than the LP, which is really saying something. Pure blazin'!
