8/10 Brett Staff review, 30 September 2010

I don't think the guys from Emeralds have put much of a foot wrong on anything so far so it's no surprise that this latest release from their guitarist extraordinaire is a tidy effort. The Wire review for this was banging on about this being his 'childhood album' and based on the titles ('Around the Old Neighbourhood', 'Moving Apart', 'Brothers (for Matt)' etc.) you'd have to reckon that they probably hit the nail on the head with that. The resulting, generally light and blissful, music often evokes something of the bittersweet rose-tinted nostalgia of faded colour Super 8 home movies, predominantly via his Manuel Gottsching-esque, pedal-manipulated playing but also with the occasional field recording-y interlude (of his actual family?) I guess some might see the whole thing as being a little self-indulgent but personally I'm enjoying the personal aspect and finding that his memory pool is quite a nice place to float around in for a spell.
