Righto. What we need in this office RIGHT NOW is a healthy portion of whacked-out punk-jazz. Yes. PUNK JAZZ. You heard me. Imagine a cross between Red Snapper, Dr. John, Terry Edwards, Beefheart & Stump? You're still nowhere near ya see. This band haven't released a full length record for almost a decade & a half. We had a 7" single in ages ago & it blew our minds (and it's featured on here too!), such was the level of guttural genre splicing madness spitting from the speakers! Mashing-up gibbering spoken word/bent-out-of-shape vocal styling's, tribalistic percussion; weird bass strides; shards of squalling, meandering guitar; devilish squawks of deranged brass & some insane random electronics, this band have constructed a wild yet strangely accessible blend that sounds all at once joyous, possessed & eccentric. They're probably more progressive & cutting-edge than half the International avant-garde scene. I get the same wonky essence from these as I get from pioneering nu-jazz bands such as Fulborn Teversham & Polar Bear but also a similar feel of twinkly-eyed derangement as you'd get from listening to a quality Nurse With Wound LP or even a latter period Nightingales outing. But the main thing about Blurt is that despite the silly name & the even wibblier music, they never, ever let go of the funk. That's what makes them exceptional.
