After DJ Mujava made dancefloors on this grungy old isle pound to the the euphoric stepping groove of Kwaito house, there's not been much of that style passing through these doors in recent months. This LV collaboration with Cape Town's Okmalumkoolkat (Smiso Zwane) is a quality bouncy, itchy butt-shaking romp with some proper mad whizzing, ripping & fizzing noises & subtle percussive embellishments. The relentless vocal stabs get on your tits ever so slightly (this genre has strong parallells with some of the Portugese Kuduro gear like Buraka Som Sistema and bits of the Chicago Juke/Footwork stuff) but the whole choon is so exuberant & fun you can't resist. Business Lady reckons French madhead DeBruit does this type o' t'ing so much better & she may well be right, yet 'Boomslang' is still a totally top tune. Confusingly, the flip is more reminiscent to Brett of labelmate LB. 'Zharp' is quite a different beast - snaky, stripped-back, eerie and percussive. I hate to say it but I think I like it even more than the A side. The lead vocals sound rather otherworldly & the track has this minimal garage feel crossed with maybe some essence of Shackleton. Love the way LV has processed, chopped and manipulated Smiso's vocals into the organic sound of a mystical instrument. Good twelve lads...
