- Farmers Angle (Revised Edition) by Belbury Poly
9/10 Brian Staff review, 09 September 2010
Just looked for more info on this & found that the original of Farmer's Angle was a 4 track 3" CDr and also the first ever Ghost Box release to boot. They started small & now they're big, like a hot dog chomping sofa surfing buffoon lounging around in the American midwest. Except much more appealing obviously. Now 6 tracks long - one of them 'Cold Air' has been substituted for a new Advisory Circle refix called, wait for it - 'Warm Air! You see what they just did there? Well, we've some smashing tunes here, coming across like the cream of that evocative post-library music stuff, those cheeky incidental 70's TV theme-style sounds that don't actually reek of aural gorgonzola - instead they just slide off your mind like the dinky, memory-massaging gems they are. The thing with this stuff is that when it's done well like this, it gives you such a sense of well-being & contentment it should be used in stress-busting workshops rather than that fucking dolphin music & the pan pipes or whatever. No offence to the chillwave massive but this has much more soul, fun & substance to it! Think early Bibio, Hot Butter, Broadcast & of course Boards of Canada. A sublime feast for the ears!
10/10 Fibes Customer review, 20th October 2014
Having discovered the haunting joys of Ghost Box at around the time of The Belbury Tales, I'm slowly trying to work my way back through the rest of the catalogue. So was pretty chuffed to find this Belbury Poly 10" still floating around. Where Belbury Tales explores a more electric folk landscape, this is far more electronic; a reet melodic Radiophonic mashup channelling the sonic spirits of messrs Baker, Derbyshire. Clarke and Kingsland. Sometimes happy, sometimes reflective, always spookily propelling us into that upside-down parallel universe modelled on some long-forgotten BBC schools programme.
Also worth noting that you really do get your money's worth with Ghost Box - everything I've come across so far has been impeccably pressed onto sumptuously thick vinyl, and not overpriced for the privilege. There are a number of other labels (whom I will refrain from naming) that should be taking careful note.
