There's something incredibly special about this bunch. I was wondering what they'd been up to, just heard things had kicked off for them in the States after having songs featured on the telly program Grey's Anatomy. Thought they may return wearing stetsons, sounding like Band of Horses. Thanks God not! They still effortlessly manage to convey deep emotions within deceptively simple songs that are, in fact, full of tragic beauty & depth. Lawrence Becko has one of those distinctive, slightly wavering voices that is both rich & fragile sounding, often simultaneously. Merging strings, brass & piano with an increasingly powerful brand of baroque post-rock & orchestral pop, this album is a fiercer, grander & more dramatic animal than their debut, but retains the delicacy & tenderness they always lovingly applied to their songs. Even the occasional tracks that err towards the early Coldplay side of things sound heartfelt & genuine - the warmth and wonder throughout is undoubtedly life-affirming, the prevailing sadness you start to cherish, often recalling those Tindersticks albums you could never be parted from. I could go on for ages about the wonderful feelings I get from this majestic head-turner of an album, but I'll stop myself in my tracks and simply implore you to invest in this thrilling, soulful behemoth. Quite brilliant!
