- Enigma EP by Marcel Fengler
8/10 Brett Staff review, 30 September 2010
You can always rely on Ostgut Ton to serve up a bit of forward-thinking techno and they've been on particularly good form recently what with the Shed album, the L.B. Dub Corp 12" and others. Now Marcel Fengler can add himself to the list with this three-tracker that's a fine example of what I guess could loosly be referred to as the house style: lean, impeccably produced future techno which flirts with elements of dub techno, dubstep, funky (is anyone still calling it that?) and house without ever fully submitting to any of them. It's a neat trick but it can make their stuff a bit challenging to get a handle on with words. Something in the first track here, 'Rapture', reminds me a little of Martyn while the filtered strings of 'RazKaz' suggest Cooly G (to give two possibly slightly misleading comparisons) but for me the real highlight is the longer title track which grafts a hard-hitting pulse to a thoughtfully subtle moodiness to create an effect that gets increasingly hypnotic as it progresses.. Lovely.
