Matt Pike, one of the masterminds behind the influential band Sleep, brings us another slab of doom metal fury with 'Blessed Black Wings', and it's an album that brings High On Fire one step closer to their artistic potential, with the overall tone of the album being one of untamed aggression. The pummelling title track, the moody-as-hell "The Face of Oblivion" and the drum-heavy opening track "Devilution" are perfect examples of just how furiously devastating they can be. They also unleash their inner Motorhead on tracks like "Anointing of Seer" and "Cometh Down Hessian", combining old school thrash with the brand-new school of heavy. Each song on 'Blessed Black Wings' serves a strong apocalyptic vision that feels like the bowels of hell are tearing up the earth. High on Fire could be the epitome of heavy and this album does a good job proving that.

8/10 Jack Customer review, 27th November 2017

This is the third HOF album and there is definitely a progression - "Art of Self Defense" was very raw, dirty sounding, "Surrounded By Thieves" was slightly more polished, but still loud and hard as hell, and now with BBW, they've gotten even more cleaned up. Not to say that this is a "clean" album in any sense, but the sound is a lot less "muddy" than on the previous releases. That being said, it takes a few listens to really get at the melody in some of these songs, as the production still has that noisy HOF sound to it. I think the sound on this album is perfect.
