8/10 Brian Staff review, 09 September 2010
The side project of David Sitek, the guy in TVOTR that is probably incapable of sprouting a glorious afro, unlike his talented team mates, vents his frustration at being a lesser mortal by unleasing a monster collaborative pop project off the cuff. From the outset, there's recognizable scraps of his day job hanging off the beams of this impressive audio structure, mainly in the ecstatic, widescreen production. It all sounds rather fresh & inviting if a little over-produced. But so much popular music is totally saturated in studio trickery & needless treatment these days. If you liked the zinging, juddering, more electronic sound of the last TVOTR album you'll probably love many elements of this record. After the Mazes single though, this album sounds like someone playing 4 different records at me all at once & my head hurts. Powerful sounding gear though with some pretty neat grooves & Utopian rhythms. Do you want me to list all the "guests" that warble their way through this record? Well fuck off, I ain't. So nur.
