8/10 Brian Staff review, 19 August 2010

Started by two eager indie lovin' London-based ladies, this is a most welcome retrospective of label highlights from the first few years of The Y&LC. Originally a cool boutique label, many of the acts on here went on to much bigger things, galvanizing the label more into an industry launch pad for raw, young talent from Das Kapital & other hotspots around the country. Amongst the treasures contained herein are embryonic appearances from Good Shoes and their rattly stripped-back good time indie pop, Jamie T's mates Larrikin Love's and their excellent gender bending anthem 'Six Queens': early singles from success stories like Bombay Bicycle Club & Noah & the Whale plus the band Fear of Flying who went on to mammoth success as White Lies. Many of these singles were limited vinyl-only jobs to begin with, it's a pleasure to hear a few of these tunes years later - I'm surprised how many have stood the test of time in an ever shifting guitar pop universe. Not to say this bargain collection isn't without its fair share of teeth gratingly dubious audio slop & preening wannabee scenesters a la the mid 00's, but you can't argue with the cream of the crop here - minor indie classics infused with great hooks & certain joie de vivre.
